Exploring the cosmos from Graz, Austria

Who I Am

Hi, I'm Nico, a tech enthusiast from Graz, Austria, with a deep passion for astronomy and space exploration. Growing up under the starry skies of Styria, I developed a fascination for the cosmos, which led me to join the Styrian Amateur Astronomical Association. My love for technology and tinkering with electronics and 3D printing fuels my curiosity, blending my technical skills with my enthusiasm for sci-fi and model railways. Whether I'm stargazing, designing circuits, or building miniature train worlds, I’m driven by a desire to explore and create.

University Project

I'm currently working on an exciting project at the Observatory Lustbühel Graz for the Department of Physics: The complete electrical refurbishment of the "Ballistische Messkammer", or Ballistic Measurement Chamber (BMK).

The BMK units were custom-built in the 1970s by Carl Zeiss Jena for imaging laser-illuminated satellites to support orbital determination. Their optical design prioritizes astrometric and photometric precision and features a staggering 2.8x2.8 degrees field of view with the installed camera. It will significantly enhance the capability of the whole site once fully operational (estimated Dec 2025), by allowing for simultaneous photometry and spectroscopy of stars as well as conducting own research campaigns on large star-clusters.
